Timed Entry in Arches National Park

Project Overview

Arches National Park draws more than 1.5 million visitors annually, creating significant pressure on its iconic sandstone arches, fragile desert soils, and narrow canyon corridors. SORTL is partnering with the National Park Service to research and evaluate the implementation of a timed entry reservation system — a management strategy designed to reduce visitor crowding, protect ecological resources, and improve the overall visitor experience.

The Problem

Peak season visitation at Arches regularly overwhelms parking capacity, creates dangerous conditions on narrow trails, and contributes to soil compaction and cryptobiotic crust damage in sensitive areas. Without proactive management, rising visitation trends threaten the park’s ecological integrity and the quality of the experience for all visitors.

Research Objectives

  • Evaluate visitor satisfaction outcomes under timed entry versus unrestricted access conditions
  • Measure ecological indicators in relation to visitation density
  • Assess equity and accessibility implications of reservation-based entry systems
  • Identify optimal entry windows and daily visitor caps that balance conservation with access
  • Document best practices transferable to other high-use public lands

Methodology

The project uses a mixed-methods research design combining on-site visitor intercept surveys, ecological transect monitoring, parking and trail count data, and semi-structured interviews with park rangers, gateway community businesses, and visitor use managers. Data is collected across multiple seasons to account for temporal variation in visitation patterns and environmental conditions.

Expected Outcomes

Findings from this project will inform NPS policy decisions regarding timed entry implementation at Arches and provide a replicable research framework for evaluating reservation systems at other oversubscribed national parks and public lands. A final report and peer-reviewed publication are anticipated upon project completion.
